More Sex and the Ancients (and not so ancient)
Ancient India, the civilisation that gave us the Kama Sutra, celebrated love and sexuality. It offers no surprises therefore there were those among them who plied a trade as escorts.
The Devadasi prostitutes were originally female escorts literally 'married to gods' and were respected for their devotion. These days their situation is rather more precarious with rampant Aids and HIV. It is claimed that the religious role has largely broken down into a system of sexual exploitation and degradation. (see Temple Prostitutes in India – A Human Rights Travesty)
Moving further East this image by 18th century Japanese printmaker Utamaro depicting the world of male escorts, testifies to the existence of the phenomenon in that historical/cultural context.
